I Just Wanna Stop... and Tell You What I feel...

Note : A F F is deleting words in the t.ext. Please be patient.

Everyone has had, someone they've loved, or perhaps... someone they thought - they loved. I had.

It was '1979'... my band was just starting out. We were young, arrogant, confident.... and fucking talented. We thought we were on top of the world. When we'd p.lay a.t dances and events, they'd always have a table reserved, for the band and our 'guests' - our girlfriends. Privileged young ladies in their prime. They were dressed to the nines and proudly strutted, into a hall... as if they owned it. They walked with as much sass, ass and style... as you could possibly imagine. Everyone knew them as... the "band widows".

Nobody... in the hall would ever, approach them. To talk to them, would be a "no - no". They sat there, stoically. Soaking in the vibe and stroking our egos, when we'd take a break. Always reminding us, how great, we were playing. Regardless of any fuck ups on stage. They were our Queens... and we were their Kings.

At the time, there was a song playing on the charts, written by a Montrealer, named Gino Vannelli. He wrote this song called, "I Just Wanna Stop" . I only danced this song with her, once. It was in a huge hall and the DJ working with us, played it for me. We held each other, as if we were afraid to let go.... as if we were going to be together, forever.

Of course... t.hat never happened. Things moved on. Coincidentally, today I watched the morning news and they had Gino on, promoting his set of concerts here - in Montreal this week. More coincidence. Last night, I got a t.ext from a friend, about t.hat g.irl... the one I danced with. I thought about her and this song. Maybe you have a special song t.hat reminds you of someone. I hope you do. It's one of the best feelings in the world. No matter how long, or how short, t.hat feeling might have lasted.

Yep... I hope you do!

.................. .
Here are the lyrics... and the U Tube link... is a.t the bottom of the page. Check it out and perhaps, you might feel the vibe I felt with her... so many y.ears ago...
..........

Gino Vannelli
"I Just Wanna Stop"

For your love
When I think about those nights in Montreal
I get the sweetest thoughts' of you and m.e
Memories of love above the city lights
Ooh, I tried so hard to take it
But oh Lord my heart won't make it

I just wanna stop
And tell you what I feel about you babe
I just wanna stop
I never wanna live without you babe
I just gotta stop
For your love

When I think about the way the world must turn
I get the saddest thoughts for you and me
Memories of life and times go on and on
Ooh, I've tried s.o hard to forget it
But oh Lord my mind won't let it

I just wanna stop
And tell you what I feel about you babe
I just wanna stop
The world ain't right without you babe
I just wanna stop
For your love

Ooo, I've tried so hard to take it
But oh Lord my heart won't make it

I just wanna stop
And tell you what I feel about you babe
I just wanna stop
The world ain't right without you babe
I just wanna stop
For your love

We learned to play this song and played it once or twice. But with all due respect... we didn't have the three female backup singers to ever make it sound as worthy, so we took it off our playlist. Great song. Maybe you have one, that reminds you of someone special? What is it?

I have a couple of songs that take me back in time.....

"Bridge Over Troubled Water" and I'm dancing with my junior high crush.

"For Emily" and I'm transported to a sultry summer night with my first boyfriend.

"Annie's Song" is forever linked to my wedding day.

All my broken hearts are "Crying" with Roy Orbison.

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

Mighty fine post, Paul...

I can feel the vibe, Bud!! Well... at least I can imagine the vibe.

As a side-note: Ya know... I didn't think they let Italians into Montreal. I know when I was there ( 1991 ), they couldn't WAIT for me to drag my ass back to the states! In fact, they offered to do it for me. Now, you take a gander at that photo of me--do you really think I was gonna argue with a bunch of bob-sleddin' French lumberjacks wearin' hockey masks?

I completely understand how you can look back and feel nostalgic about them band-babes...

I used to do road-work for a number of groups back in the late 60's. ( I won't divulge them--I ain't gonna be seen around here as a "name-dropper." Suffice to say... they were well known. )

I can look back and think about them hot little critters, too... with such tunes as "Piece of my Heart"... and "Back Door Man"--they bring to remembrance all those days and nights of nasty little buzzards waitin' in the wings.

I doubt there was much in the way of "love" involved, though. And I never even thought twice about bein' stuck with the leftovers. Sexy little skanks ( even the rejects ) are still sexy little skanks! Especially when ya got yer choice... and a microwave for re-heatin'. Am I right--or what?!

Here's a tune from my early days of critter snaggin'... from them days of "drug-infused" love-dream memories--

https://youtu.be/vGsq1K7f_yc

Yep--Sexy little skanks--ya just gotta "LOVE" 'em all!

Solar...

Yep... That is so true. We gave the same evil eye to anyone trying to hit on our women. They never gave that other guy the time of day. It's quite the trip. Those were the days... lol 😘 Only a fellow musician might be able to relate... 😁

Yep... That vibe was real... lol 👍
Ya know... there's like 250,000 fricken Italians in this city. For sure they'd let you in... unless you did something. No questions being asked. lol
Well.. That Howlin guy was quite the character, for sure. Yeah... You know what that whole scene was all about. We all lived for today... Never a thought about tomorrow. Quite the illusion. And so easy to sustain when you're up on stage and doing what you love.
I'm sure you have some great stories to share. I can only imagine! 😁😱
Nothing beats the thrill of walking into a venue with a hot babe on your arms and have a hundred pairs of eyes on you, as you went through a sound check . And those girls knew how to take care of themselves. I'm just thinking about some of them now... lol
I was young. WTF did I know? Did it for many, many years. Of course... we never got as hi as the big boys. But we had our moments. Didn't we all though?
Youth is wasted on the young! Sometimes...
Hey.. Thanks for sharing. I will only imagine what went down! 👍

I can certainly understand why that song would have special meaning to you.
Music has the ability to transport me back to special moments and memories.
The movie "The Wizard of Oz" terrified me as a kid. However, what always stood out was the song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow'". I have heard many versions but Judy Garland's version does it for me each and every time. I can't listen to it without crying. Years later when my son was hospitalized in isolation, I spent countless hours rewinding and playing it on his Fisher-Price radio. I still have it too.

*sigh*

Oh yes...Journey, Separate Ways. My first love...he was in a band...played keyboards and sang. They played this song, and had made a recording of it. I had a cassette copy of the recording that I wore out. Bitter sweet memories...the love was one-sided. We never "dated", though we did things together and were FWBs...constant mixed messages from that guy.

We had a conversation, he and I, when my daughter was still pretty small. His marriage was falling apart...and he realized he'd blown it with me. It was probably a good thing we never dated or got married. He was pretty selfish...I would have been miserable.

Wow. Haven't thought about all of that mess in years, lol.

There are other songs that bring back all sorts of memories...unfortunately, it seems most of them are sad.

Loved Journey... I can only imagine you as a groupie... You must have been a cute one.. lol... 😊
A lot of guys in bands were selfish. I used to know every one of them around here. You might not have liked me then. Lol We were an arrogant bunch.
But damm we had some great times.
Sad times? No... Teenage angst... Those youthful electrons would play mind games with everyone. Us guys as well .
Sounds like a classic memory... in spite of the sadness.
Yep Journey... omg! That was a great band!
They don't make em like that anymore! 😊
I would have said hello.... and let you sit behind my kit! 😘
Thanks for sharing. Gino Vannelli was playing that song live, on my station... this morning and that's what prompted this whole thought.

Don't close your eyes.... let it be me...❤️
Great song... That's a real tear jerker! yep... 😖😘

When we played live... we'd do a full set of slow love songs. We had 4 vocalists... we could Kill any song with harmonies that would slay and hypnotize. Our goal would be to make the whole fucking dance floor swoon and vibrate. When we'd see couples kissing and crying in each other's arms we knew, we had hit the right notes. 💞
We'd see couples old and young actually stop dancing... walk up to the front of our stage and just stand there, holding each other, tears in their eyes, hugging each other... just ... listening to us sing.. Go figure. It got to me a few times.... lol I had to stop watching them... 😢
Then we'd follow that up with "YMCA" 😱😂 and we'd fuck up the vibe completely.... lol It was a lot of fun to watch 500 people making out on the dance floor...

Music.... go figure... Songs can trip you out if you pay you pay too close attention to the lyrics. Thanks for sharing. Your song choice got to me... lol 😘❤️

Old? At 52? I'd show you... if I thought you'd see things in my light. I'd speak to you... if I thought you'd listen. I'd write the reasons down... if I thought you'd read them...
Anyone can change their opinion about anything... if they want to... and there's a reason to change. You haven't been given enough reasons to drop that 'bitterness' cloak.
That's enough from me... right? No worries. I'll shut up! 😂 😊
